Skills is excited to announce that it is part of the Government Regulatory Practice Initiative (G-REG) entry into the prestigious IPANZ Public Sector Excellence Awards 2018. G-REG is a network of central and local government organisations with the overall goal of improving the professionalism of regulatory practice. Its ground-breaking qualifications have been nominated in the Achieving Collective Impact category.
G-REG explained in simple terms
G-REG is designed to benefit anyone who works for, aspires to work for, or is closely associated with, a regulatory compliance organisation. The G-REG qualifications are designed to formalise training, and support improved leadership, culture and capability in regulatory practice through-out local and central government. They are offered as online, self-paced learning and assessment packages using a bespoke Learning Management System (LMS) designed by Skills’ e-learning and technology development partners at the Shift Innovation Centre.
The G-REG qualifications represent a unique academic career development opportunity as the largest and most comprehensive, structured, cross-government regulatory practice professional development programme in the world. They are breaking ground as the first set of qualifications focusing on regulatory practice to be available in New Zealand.
The Deloitte IPANZ Public Sector Awards
The Institute of Public Administration New Zealand (IPANZ) is an organisation that provides seminars, training and networking to promote advances in public sector policy and administration. The IPANZ awards brings together the ‘who’s-who’ of the New Zealand government sector and is entering its tenth year in 2018.
IPANZ provides a forum for its members to learn, share, and debate new ideas and celebrate excellence. It has a membership of 150 corporates as well as individual members and a database reach of circa 7,000 people.

The philosophy behind the G-REG qualifications are that they will provide both a broad overview of the New Zealand regulatory system and areas of specific skill development, while also helping to provide a common understanding (and language) for all types of Government service practitioners.
Overall, G-REG aims to bring together the regulatory workforce to develop people capability, organisational capability and support a professional regulator community - working on actions that improve regulatory practice, regulatory leadership, regulatory culture, and workforce capability in organisations and systems. These in turn provide better outcomes for the public.
Gaining formal recognition in government regulatory practice also empowers individuals to take their professional development to the next level and increase their likelihood of promotion.
