Get the right person

So you’ve decided you’re ready. Now it’s time to go out there and find your apprentice!

Finding the right apprentice requires some thought, so here are some tips to help you get the right person for you and your business.

Apprenticeship prerequisites

Your new apprentice will need to have either:

  • NCEA Level 2 in subjects that relate to the industry they will be working in.
  • Equivalent qualifications

Previous experience

While many apprentices learn while on the tools, some apprentices will take a course before becoming an apprentice.

Do you want an apprentice who has done a pre-trade course, or do you want them fresh so you can train them your way from the start?  The choice is yours.

Managed apprenticeships

If your workload is patchy or you don’t want the responsibility of managing your own apprentice, there are companies that will let you hire an apprentice to suit your needs.  Examples include The Apprentice Training Trust (ATT), The Electrical Training Company (ETCO) and Masterlink.

Learning more about the apprentice

Here are some tips to help you find someone who will be a good fit for you:

  • Set clear expectations on what you are looking for e.g. NCEA level 2, drivers licence
  • Get prospective apprentices to do work experience with you, to see if you will work well together
  • Set initial meetings for 7.30am – it will show if they’re awake and can get to work on time!
  • Do reference checks

Where to look / advertise

  • Your local polytechnic or training provider is a great place to start as they will have potential apprentices completing their pre-trade course. Doing a pre-trade course indicates they are keen to become an electrician. This also ensures the person you take on will have some knowledge and skills to hit the ground running
  • Wholesalers and other companies may know of someone who is looking
  • Websites such as Seek or TradeMe are also a great place to advertise
  • Local schools, the careers advisor, trades academy and school leadership.
